Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information The Service Collective collects, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Who we are

The Service Collective ("TSC", "we", "us") engages and empowers youth to take action in their community through volunteer service. Our website is https://theservicecollective.org.

The Service Collective is a project of our fiscal sponsor, the Fund for the City of New York (EIN: 13-2612524), which provides administrative, legal, and insurance support.

2. Information we collect

  • Volunteer & program profiles: name, email address, phone number, school, neighborhood, age or grade, and t-shirt size.
  • Account information: the email address you sign in with (we use one-time email codes instead of passwords) and your activity on the platform, such as event registrations and attendance.
  • Waivers: the names, signature details, and dates recorded when you or your parent/guardian sign our Volunteer Waiver.
  • Media & likeness: photographs, film, and video taken at our programs, used in accordance with the Volunteer Waiver.
  • Donation information: your name, email address, and donation amount. Payments are processed by Stripe — we never see or store your full card number.
  • Form submissions: anything you send us through our contact and inquiry forms.
  • Technical data & cookies: we use cookies to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences, and we may log technical data such as IP address and browser type for security and spam prevention.

3. Children's privacy (COPPA)

Our public forms and account sign-up require you to confirm that you are at least 13 years old. Children under 13 take part in TSC programs through a parent or guardian: registration and waiver signatures for younger volunteers are completed by the parent or guardian, and we do not knowingly collect personal information online directly from children under 13.

If you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

4. SMS messaging & mobile privacy

  • What we collect: your mobile phone number and your messaging preferences. We only text numbers whose owner has consented; consenting to texts is never a condition of participating in our programs or of any purchase.
  • How we use it: we send SMS about the events you sign up for — registration confirmations and cancellations, reminders, schedule changes, waitlist openings, post-event thank-yous, and occasional important program announcements.
  • No third-party sharing: we do not sell or share your mobile phone number, your SMS consent, or your opt-in data with third parties or affiliates, and we never use them for third-party marketing. This data is shared only with the messaging provider (Twilio) that delivers our texts on our behalf.
  • Opt-out & help: reply STOP to unsubscribe at any time, or HELP for help. Message frequency varies, and message and data rates may apply.

5. Email

We send transactional email — registration confirmations, event reminders, waiver requests, and donation receipts — to run our programs. Our newsletter is opt-in, and every issue includes an unsubscribe link.

6. How we share your data

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with:

  • Partner organizations, when needed to coordinate the events you sign up for.
  • Our fiscal sponsor, the Fund for the City of New York, for administrative, legal, and insurance purposes.
  • Service providers that help us operate — payment processing (Stripe), email and SMS delivery, and website hosting — only as needed to provide their services.

Embedded third-party content (such as maps or videos) behaves as if you visited that third party’s website and follows its own policies.

7. Data retention & your rights

We keep volunteer and donation records for as long as needed for our organizational records and legal obligations.

You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you, or ask us to erase it — except data we are required to keep for legal, safety, or administrative reasons (for example, signed waivers and donation records). Send requests through our contact page.

8. Security

We protect personal data with reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, restrict access to the people who need it, and rely on trusted infrastructure providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work hard to protect your information.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time; the "Last updated" date above reflects the latest revision. Significant changes will be announced on this page.
